“The only limits you have are the limits you believe.” ~ Wayne Dyer
At the moment, I am swimming in the pool first thing in the morning. Why?
Just to challenge myself and get rid of my beliefs about cold and comfort. And you know what? It is working! I feel even more alive and vibrant than usual and I am finding lots of satisfactions in this new routine. Watching a video about Wim Hof was the trigger. If you haven’t heard about him before read this article or watch a video. It is very inspiring!
This has led me to reflect on the value of challenging ourselves.
Remember, when you were a child, how proud you were when you rode your bike alone for the first time? Your parents might have been cheering you up and congratulating you for your success.
When was the last time you pushed your boundaries and got out of your comfort zone?
It can be easy in our grown-up lives and routine to forget about the necessity to try something new, to spread our wings further, to become again a hero.
Of course, life sometimes put us right in front of an unexpected challenge, and we have to find a way to deal with it. If we are not prepared, we are often submerged by our emotional reactions instead of answering calmly and efficiently.
I believe that Intentionally challenging ourselves has four major benefits.
1/ It deepens our relationship with ourselves.
Choosing a challenge and overcoming it, gives us an opportunity to discover new aspects of our personality and abilities. It can even lead us up to discover a passion we were ignoring or meet people that we would never have met otherwise. I can be life changing.
2/ It Increases our self-esteem
When we push our limits, we experience joy and satisfaction. We value and respect ourselves. if we refuse a challenge by fear of failing, we could experience regrets all our life.
The desire for growth is what makes life exciting and fulfilling.
3. We are able to experience personal power
Challenging ourselves teaches us to take responsibility for everything happening to us and for our choices. We are not a victim, we are part of the creation process. We are in charge of our destiny. It is a very uplifting feeling.
4/ It teaches us resilience
An important life’s skill that enables us to develop mechanisms for coping with experiences that could be overwhelming. Resilience helps us maintain balance in our lives during difficult or stressful periods of time.
