The primary goal of meditation is to transform our experience of the world and to free us from afflictive emotions, patterns and unconscious thoughts. Meditation also helps us to cultivate wholesome qualities that remain dormant within us if we don’t make the effort to draw them out.
Test conducted by major universities, and research centres have found that meditation has beneficial effects on our physical and mental health. Meditation decreases the stress and anxiety, improves wellbeing and sense of purpose, helps pain management, strenghthen our attention and learning abilities.
In her book ‘Extraordinary knowing” Elisabeth Lloyd Mayer demonstrates the positive results of meditation gained by patients treated for cancer.
-20 minutes of daily practice can contribute significantly to the reduction of stress, anxiety and anger and improve concentration.
-30 minutes a day significantly improves the immune system, accelerates healing, reduces arterial pressure and reinforces positive emotions.
Another effect of meditation is to develop compassion and unconditional love. Experiments have shown that the region of the brain associated with qualities like compassion exhibits greater activity among people who have meditative experience.
