Origin of Cacao Ceremonies
Cacao ceremonies have been around for thousands of years. The Olmecs, one of the earliest civilisations in Latin America, were the first to turn the cacao plant into chocolate, very different from chocolate as we know it nowadays. They drank their cacao during rituals and used it as medicine.
Mayans and Aztec revered cacao. Their written history mentions cacao being used in celebrations and to finalize transactions.
Aztecs believed cacao was a gift from their god Quetzalcoatl, and drank it as a refreshing and uplifting beverage, an aphrodisiac, and even to prepare for war. They also used cacao beans as currency and cacao beans were considered more valuable than gold.
Around 1528, cacao was discovered by the first European explorers and became popular amongst the royal court in Spain, France and Italy. The drink was used as a medicine, an energy boost and for its aphrodisiac effects.
Qualities of Ceremonial Cacao
Sacred Cacao is prepared for spiritual, medicinal and ceremonial purposes. I use Anchoring the Light high vibration cacao, organically and sustainably grown from Peru. Cacao is a gentle but potent plant medicine. It is a powerful antioxidant and a high natural source of iron, calcium and magnesium. Cacao also increases blood flow to the brain and induces the release of feel-good endorphins. It has an active ingredient in it called theobromine—which can be translated to, “Food of the Gods.”
What to expect during a Cacao Ceremony?
While shared under the guidance of an experienced practitioner, ceremonial Cacao allows you in a gentle way to release blockages, past traumas and grief before opening your heart to experience a profound connection with your true self. When the heart space blooms like a flower everything feels heightened. The emotional impact can be profound. You may experience a deep compassion and empathy for your self and others and a state of euphoria. The sheer ecstasy felt from the cacao is often described as a divine experience.
Sacred Cacao has also the power to stimulate our sacral chakra, seat of the divine feminine for both men and women. It is a liberating and sensual experience. Being able to create a state of harmony between our Sacral and our Heart chakras is a very uplifting and stimulating experience that allows us to move towards the fullest expression of who we really are.
What are the physical effects?
Pure cacao contains 10 grams of flavonol antioxidants per 100 grams, it is a great source of magnesium, serotonin, dopamine, anandamide and phenylethylamine (PEA), which are associated with feelings of well being and help alleviate depression. Cacao contains an abundance of theobromine that stimulates the cardiovascular system. It can also have a detoxifying effect on the liver and kidneys and it is wise to drink plenty of water after a ceremony to avoid headaches or other signs of detox.
