This is the time of year when we are more prone to colds and flu. Here are some natural tricks to warm up and boost your immune system.
1/Exercise first thing in the morning. Go for a walk for some cardio work and/or if you practice yoga do 5 or 6 salute to the sun. great way to create heat and activate your metabolism. When possible exercise outdoor and enjoy the winter sun on your skin. As you know the sun is one of the best sources of vitamin D.
2/ Brush your skin before your shower to stimulate your circulation and your lymphatic system. Using a dry natural bristle brush or loofah, start at your toes and gently brush upwards towards your heart using sweeping motions. Gharsana, the Ayurvedic practice also involves dry brushing and massaging certain points in the body to help detoxify, stimulate movement in the lymphatic system. Dry brushing helps improve circulation, skin tone, stimulate your energy and helps you feel great.
3/Choose heat-producing foods
For a quick warm up have some soup or an herbal tea. Make your own ginger tea (boil some fresh ginger for 10 mn) add some raw honey and sip it all day. Spice up your food! Cinnamon (great with apple compote or on grilled grapefruit), black pepper, chilli, cardamon, cayenne, curry and turmeric (try Wellness mama Golden Milk recipe). Keep a good part of your diet raw, as the body produces more internal heat in digesting raw foods.
4/Boost your vitamin intake. Winter fruits and vegetables keep the body warm with their high anti-oxidant, mineral and vitamin content and boost immune system. Oranges, pink grapefruits, pomegranates, strawberries, onions, beets, broccoli, cabbage, pumpkin, sweet potato. eat the rainbow!
